Which device has the better backlight, the iPad or the Kindle?

This is a very easy question to answer as the iPad is backlit and the Amazon Kindle for some reason has no backlight at all!
I have been looking at various sites that I have found on Google trying to find out the reason for this seemingly strange absence.
I have put some links to the sites I have been looking at, apparently although you can't read it in the dark, the Kindle is better for reading in sunlight,
news.cnet.com has this useful information on their page:
"In contrast, the iPad's LCD screen is a bright, colorful, beautiful display; But those advantages have trade-offs. The iPad's reflective screen makes it hard to read in bright light, and many people find that the backlight tires their eyes over long reading sessions."
buzzle.com has a very interesting article about the pros and cons of every aspect of the two products, including a comparison chart.
There are a few more links with good information, I hope this helps.
