What's the fastest way to convert AVI/MPEG files to the iPad/iPod compatible MP4 format?

Tip for best answer: M$3.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Air video (available in the app store) and their companion server software is the best way to convert video for use on the iPod and iPad. The software and app will convert video in real time for streaming and or save a complete conversion for offline use. Conversions are incredibly fast and will use most of your computers resources (it uses all 4 of my computers CPUs). I have converted a two hour HD movie in about 30 minutes!

The Elgato Turbo.264 HD USB encoder. Works great, encodes at about 140fps (handbrake gets about 40fps under similar settings). Worth the money, IMO.

Air video is a MUST OWN. Not only can it cross-code any filetype in real time (even HD if your computer at home is fast enough), it has a lesser-known feature: it can batch convert files for longer-term storage on the iPad. Downside: conversion must be initiated from iPad/iPhone.

Open the file in QuickTime Player.app (not QuickTime Player 7) and click on the send to iTunes button second from right at the bottom. Then select "iTunes" and the program will save your file to iTunes where it will be ready to sync to your iPad/iPod next time you sync. Perhaps not the fastest, but the most convenient. It will work in the background, you can go on to do other things while it's working, and it has the fewest number of clicks.

I have to go on record and saythat after a month or two of burning through Mahalo Answers and typing and researching, I'm pretty bummed out to see that all of the "unhelpful" votes came from seemingly new and dead accounts. It's not even about that it's my first "unhelpful" vote, or about the M$3.00. Everyone provided a valid solution. Tthe question was even voted down.

What ever happened to just posting an obnoxious comment if you're not happy? APParently a thing of the past. Voting people down? As my first-grader son would say, "Dude, that's not cool."
