What are the Top 10 iPad Apps of 2010?

I have a couple of questions here about iPad Apps. There seem to be an endless supply of apps, new apps, and then more new apps and while some of them are great some are not so so useful. Over the past year what have been your personal Top 10 iPad Apps of 2010? What are the top 10 Free iPad Apps? What are the top 10 overall applications for the iPad in 2010?

Bonus for the "Hidden Jewel" iPad Application. What was the personal surprise hit?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hello buddawiggi,

Let me start by saying that I am a Mac (convert), so some of my selections are dependent on OSX

I would like to start with two of the best apps for FINDING iPad apps:
#1 AppShopper
#2 AppAdvice

I would consider these two to be my top apps in every category. Why?
Because they have allowed me to find pretty much all of my other selections either on sale or for free (during a limited time promotion).

AppShopper, with free registration, allows you to track apps you are interested in and shows you a price history, which is very useful in predicting if an app has a tendency to go on sale in cycles.

AppAdvice is more of an app review service, but also includes a section on "apps gone free". The reviews are very useful for making that final decision on forking over your hard earned .99 to 9.99.

Both of these apps work really well in conjunction with the iPad's built in AppStore app. Both AppShopper and AppAdvice are, in the words of Mahalo.com, "great places to start your research", but I find reading the reviews in the app store is the final decision maker.

OK, now on to the rest of my list:

#3 ReaddleDocs
When I originally bought my iPad, I was hoping to use it as a "laptop replacement" when I was away from my laptop (which was not very often). The primary goal was a way to edit/view Microsoft Office docs, PDF files and various other work related documents. During my search, I tried out Quickoffice, Office2 HD, Numbers, Keynote, Pages, GoodReader and several others. The conclusion I came to was that it is possible to create documents, but compatibility with the desktop/laptop counterparts is just not quite there yet, at least for editing. So for the time being, I would consider ReaddleDocs to be the best. ReaddleDocs does provide editing of straight text, but for office documents, it is just a reader (though it also has PDF annotation features). The main feature for me is the seamless synchronization with http://dropbox.com/. But the number of new feature added in each frequent release is also quite amazing.

#4 1Password for iPad
First off, 1Password for iPad is not cheap, and the companion app for the mac (and now windows as well) is even more expensive. But for storing sensitive information such as banking info, software registration, etc, there really isn't a better option. Though I have to say that I am disappointed in the iPad app, because if they were to add the folder structure available in the desktop version, it would make the iPad version so much more useful.

#5 iCabMobile
iCabMobile is an alternative web browser to the safari browser built in to the iPad. There are many small reasons to choose an alternative browser, but the biggest one for me, available in iCabMobile, is easy synching of bookmarks with FireFox on the Mac. The other feature that sets it apart is the tabbed browsing. It is not a 100% replacement for safari on the iPad, but it is my default choice.

#6 MacJournal
I am still waiting for the perfect notes storage combination for both desktop and ipad. What I really want is something that allows for at least bolding, underline, font selection, etc. and easily syncs between both platforms. I still haven't found the perfect solution, but so far, MacJournal for the iPad and for Mac, is the best solution. The Mac version is very good and has almost all the features I am looking for. The iPad version is quite good as well, but only supports editing of text documents. But as far as options for syncing all of your notes, with folder stucture between the Mac and the iPad, it is the best option I have found.

#7 Air Video
Air Video is quite amazing to me. Basically, it allows you to take almost any video on your mac, and stream it real time to your iPad over WiFi. For those of us with the 16GB iPads, this means being able to carry around your entire video collection without taking up all of your precious space (at least in the comfort of your home). By the way, they do offer a free version, but I haven't tried it, as I was sold on the paid version form the get go.

#8 Air Display
Air Display (Not to be confused with Air Video) is an app that allows you to use your iPad as a second monitor over WiFi. While you should not expect to be able to run HD movies in this fashion, it is quite useful as a secondary display for your email, IM, etc. While I haven't used it as much as I had hoped to this point, it did stop me from purchasing a $100+ secondary display device, and for around $10, it's a good solution)

#9 Heritage
Have you ever wanted to travel the world, but just didn't have the time or the money to do so? Well, fotopedia may be your best option. This (free) app is an absolutely stunning photo viewer of all "world heritage" sites around the globe. Not only do you get to see beautiful pictures of amazing locations, you get descriptions and background on each. It's a must have app.

#10 iSpy
Somewhat similar to Heritage, iSpy let's you travel the world from the comfort of your living room. iSpy is simply an app that displays a grid of public video feeds from around the world. The videos are broken down in to categories and can be searched by topic. While the title implies a bit of a "seedy" nature, that's not what it's for (or what is available). What is available is live feeds from the top of Mount Fuji in Japan, ski slopes in Norway, local pubs in midwest USA and just about every thing in between.

I am planning to answer your other question about iPad games when I have the time, but I thought I would add a few more "productivity" apps below that I didn't have a chance to describe in detail, but found useful:

Pocket Informant

TuneIn Radio

WolframAlpha for Ipad

AwsomeNote HD

2Do for iPad

SimpleNote

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

1. Air Video
The iPad is a great media player. The size of the screen coupled with the quality of the display really makes it a great way to catch up on lots of content. Although you can use iTunes to transfer movie and music files to your iPad, converting and transferring can be a complicated and tedious process. This is why Air Video is so great — it makes it extremely simple to stream video from your Mac or PC to your iPad.

2. Real Racing HD
Real Racing for the iPhone was a great racing game. Real Racing HD is even better. The use of the accelerometer for turning and maneuvering might make you look a little weird to your friends, but the graphics, sound, controls and gameplay are all top-notch.

Seriously, this is a great racing game and its a great game to really show off the power of the iPad!

3. GoodReader for iPad
We’ve written about our affinity for GoodReader both on the iPhone and the iPad in the past, but it bears a repeated mention. Simply put, GoodReader is one of the best document readers/file managers out there. Period. You can connect to Dropbox (Dropbox), Box.net, Google Docs (Google Docs), FTP servers, and local computers, and download files directly off the web.

More than just a PDF viewer (though it is a great PDF viewer), the app can read a variety of different file types and can even let you open documents inside other apps to make editing a breeze.

4. Mondo Solitaire
Mondo Solitaire was one of the apps we highlighted in our early roundup of iPad video previews. In practice, the app is extremely addictive and extremely entertaining.

Mondo Solitaire comes in two varieties, a pack of the most popular games or the whole shebang. If you like card games, we recommend getting the full package and then having a blast playing through tons of variations of Solitaire and Freecell.

I have personally spent many hours playing Mondo Solitaire that otherwise could have been spent sleeping or being productive.

5. Wired Magazine
Released earlier this week, Wired for the iPad has already sold over 24,000 copies. For good reason too: Wired for the iPad is a great example of what publishers and content creators can do when they really fire on all cylinders.

While we aren’t sure if we would buy Wired every month without some sort of better subscription plan, the first issue, which includes a look at the making of Toy Story 3, is really worth checking out.

6. Kindle for iPad
Apple’s iBooks application is fantastic, but when it comes to content selection, Amazon still has the lead. Kindle for the iPad is a really good e-reader app, and makes it easy to browse through books. It seamlessly launches the web-based book store to make purchasing a snap.

We think Apple has the edge in overall presentation, but you can’t beat Kindle in price or selection. Also, while not as utterly beautiful as iBooks, Kindle for the iPad is still great to look at.

7. Epicurious
Even if you’re like me and cooking consists of re-heating take-out and making reservations, there is something to love about the Epicurious app. There are so many recipes and ideas, not to mention gorgeous pictures, that this is a great app to have on hand before hitting the market or just to gaze at while waiting for the pizza delivery guy.

8. Dropbox
f you are a Dropbox user, you owe it to yourself to get the Drobox app for the iPad. It brings all of what makes the iPhone app great and makes it even better. You can save content directly to your device, you can upload content off your device and you can view and playback media content all in the app.

Dropbox is a great way to stay connected to the documents on your computer no matter where you are.

9. The Guardian Eyewitness
UK publication The Guardian released a really terrific iPad app that features its stunning photography. Visually, this app is one of our favorites. The form factor of the iPad makes it perfect for really enjoying and studying the art that accompanies news stories.

10. NewsRack
NewsRack is our current pick as the best newsreader available for the iPad. It syncs with Google Reader (Google Reader) seamlessly, so if you add a feed, it is added to Google Reader — if you remove it, it’s removed there too. However, you can selectively sync only certain feeds or categories, which can make news reading on the iPad more manageable.

The iPad is a terrific way to browse the web, and that includes RSS feeds. NewsRack is a top-notch app that also works on the iPhone, if you want to keep everything in sync across devices.
