Please tell me why I should get an iPad? Why do I need an iPad?

I haven't had a chance to do much research on an iPad therefore don't really know what it is capable of but I know that people are raving about them. Could someone give me a general rundown on what an iPad actually does and why I should get one?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

First of all, you don't *need* an iPad. You will be able to live a perfectly normal life without an iPad.
That said, there are a dozen things the iPad can do for you, and you might really enjoy any or all of them. Whether the iPad is for you, depends on which of these uses you like, and whether you are willing to pay over $499 - $829 for.

Here are some of the things the iPad can do:
- eReader: With the iPad, Apple introduced the iBook format, and includes Apps, making the iPad function as an e-reader like the Amazon Kindle. If you like to read magazines, or the occasional electronic book, this is a big plus on the ipad.
Here's a video with some hands-on experience with that:

- Games: The iPad is definitely slated as a gaming console. With its acceleration detection ans multi-touch capabilities, the iPad is a fierce competitor of all handheld game consoles, as well as the Wii, and possibly even the Playstation 3 and xbox 360
Here are two videos of some great games examples:

- Multimedia: Of course no Apple product is complete without a wide range of mulitmedia playback options. This iPad is no different, allowing you to playback anything your iPhone and iPod touch could, only bigger and better. The ipad is able to play back DVD quality movies.

Again a hands-on video for video playback:

-Business: The ipad can be used for many business applications, like text editing, spreadsheet handling, and even for presentations (using Apple's Keynote).

And finally: Apps! Apps open up the world to just about anything imaginable. Developers are constantly thinking of new products and ways to use the iPad, and these are all becoming available

As a goodbye, here are three videos covering all major features of the ipad. These should be more than enough to convince you:

Yes, the iPad has Internet/Wifi (depending on the model), and you can do research with it. You can read and write emails with it, but some don't like the on-screen keyboard to type while on the road. On a fixed location, you can add an external keyboard to it, and use it as a mini-laptop:

Just keep in mind, the iPad is not a full laptop. It's more like a big iPhone, and make sure you get the 3G version if you're going to use it a lot on the road.

Oh, you can't use it as a secondary screen to a laptop, PC or Mac, it is a stand-alone device.

Thank you for your response. Since I don't play games and I haven't really read any books lately (only a few magazine articles) those wouldn't be of much value. What I do see may help is would I be able to use it as a second monitor for research?
Can it be used for internet search and emails (writing and reading) while on the road?

G'day

Do you need an iPad? Well, an iPad won't save your life and you can certainly survive without one. Perhaps a better question is "will and iPad improve my life?" I think it will.

An iPad will:

- allow you to consume and access media is a new and most enjoyable way never imagined.

- make reading and sending email a simple and positive experience.

- will help the environment by reducing the amount of paper used by less printing (I have been sending my notes and documents to my iPad rather than print them for meetings).

- makes note taking at meetings easy and gives you a 'so cool' air about you.

- will keep you informed on all world events everyday. This is my favorite feature of the iPad, every morning I read the papers from around the world - I am up to date and constantly aware of what is happen on this planet we call earth.

- web browsing is a completely new experience

I haven't read a negative experience from anyone who actually has an iPad and I would link it would be hard to have one.

Get an iPad, you won't be disappointed.
