Bio: Maholo Bio
Wow, I'm happy that you are interested in learning more about me. I am currently working on PhD in neuroscience at UCLA and have to admit that science is a big part of my life. But that's the end of the story lets look at the beginning.
I grew up in Texas and loved it there. I was always interested in how things worked and explored the world around me (my first science experiment was when I was two years old :). What really catapulted my scientific interests was the time I spent in Woods Hole, MA every summer. Home of the Marine Biological Laboratories (MBL) and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI, they discovered the Titanic by the way) I had the freedom to interact with some of the greatest scientists in the world. For two summers in my late teens I worked for the MBL as a scuba diver/collector of marine organisms for research. This was a great experience for me because I got to go out in the field and collect wide variety of plants and animals in their natural environment and give the directly to the researchers who used them in their experiments. This gave me the opportunity to learn a lot about ecology, marine conservation, and biology. From there I went to college at Tufts University and majored in Biology and Anthropology. During college I took a course in neurobiology and that was when I discovered neuroscience had the most challenging and unanswered questions to solve. After college I went directly into a PhD program at UCLA and am starting my fifth year.
What my life experiences have taught me is that the natural world is an awe-inspiring place. Throughout my life have been continuously reminded of that fact. Today I am investigating the how brain activity changes and remaps after stroke in an effort to find clues to help millions of people better recover from this disease, but tomorrow I want to share my experiences with the world so others can appreciate the scientific pursuit of knowledge the same way I do.
May life always inspire you and fill you with awe.
