hey Trace!

Good question. I could spend hours answering it, but in a nutshell, it comes down to being good with technology and good with people. If you can put those two together, you have the very rough basics of community management. There's a lot of business, marketing and, believe it or not, psychology behind community management, as well. The more you know in those fields, the better you'll be at online community management.

If you'd like to learn a little bit more about me and what I do, feel free to stalk me a bit on my personal website. This is the page where I talk a bit about the gig:

I am a huge supporter of this option and, while it might not be the ideal situation for a few individuals out there, I think this is exactly what Mahalo represents - a community of real people helping each other. Whether it's through polite answers or a charitable gift, I think having a universal theme to the site - learn anything/help everyone - will be beneficial in the long-term to both participation and reputation.

From my perspective, I'm already stoked to tell my family and friends, "I work at a place where people win $ to answer questions ... and then they can give that $ to the charity of their choice." Personally, I think that's pretty awesome, and I'm proud to tack my name onto that message.

This approach is going to be confusing for a handful people, but I think even they'll come around sooner rather than later. This takes Mahalo from a concept of, "I can earn money by helping people", to "I can help people ... by helping people." I've already mentioned this idea to several of my friends and believe me, they're excited. For some reason, it seems that the value of giving away $10, exceeds the personal value of actually receiving that same $10. From my point of view, I know that $10 to a struggling family in Uganda will mean more than the sandwich it would buy me in Los Angeles. And I'm not on Mahalo to buy sandwiches, I'm on Mahalo to share what I know with people that are seeking that information (...you all know the feeling of leaving a four page answer on a topic you love, before you even checked if there was a "tip" associated with that question in the first place!)

I'm excited to hear everyone else's thoughts on the idea of helping people ... by helping people :-)

The director John Ford is the person to claim four Oscar Awards for "Best Director". Directors Frank Capra and William Wyler follow his trail with three Best Director wins each.

John Ford took home his four Oscars for directing the films The Informer, The Grapes of Wrath, How Green was My Valley (also won Best Picture), and The Quiet Man. Frank Capra is most known for his two films Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's a Wonderful Life. William Wyler has Ben-Hur and Roman Holiday under his belt, among many others.

Ha, I don't know where to begin, there were so many great, classic-Calacanis moments.

A few of my favorites:

1) "Don't make 'The Google' look stupid. If you make The Google look stupid ... they will f*ck you up"

2) "I will ride Google every day for the rest of my life until I'm #1 for 'How to Cook a Turkey'"

3) "I'm going f**king crazy!" <-- re: eHow's crumby content beating Mahalo in search ranking

4) "Anybody from Huffington Post in the building ... or are they all out buying Ferraris? ...Oh you're here! ...you bought your Ferrari yesterday...

aside from having some great one-liners, it was actually a great speech about quality vs. quantity of content on the web.

Will.i.am is actually a much more complex individual than one might think - from the outward appearance of being a rapper in a band named after a southern favorite.

Will.i.am actually carries the title of "director of creative information" at Intel, maker of millions of chips. He apparently collaborates with the company in developing their smartphones, laptops and other portable devices. He is responsible for many things, among them developing new ways to "communicate, create, inform and entertain..."

Quite a broad title and job descip to be sure, but I guess when you're Will.i.am you can get away with that sort of thing.

I think it's only natural for companies to become biased in one way or another when the traditional power structure is involved - CEOs, execs, management, etc. You're only going to make it into the room of power if the higher-ups like you, and they're only going to like you enough to bring you that close, if you share at least some of their same goals and ideals. While I think AOL/Huffington Post will suffer their own minor upheavals of sorts, I'd like to believe they'll retain their (mostly) original voice. Doing anything otherwise comes at a great risk of losing hardcore fans (think, Digg). But who knows, maybe that's what they're going for.

In terms of news or information, I've found that the best thing you can do is not find a company you can trust, but an individual. Find your favorite finance blogger, research the most interesting international news sources. I've found that I enjoy information from smaller, more personalized services than giant media companies anyway.
