If you could rename the iPad, what would you name it?

Tip for best answer: M$2.09
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

iTablet

The tablet designation is one that would be more descriptive than the term "Pad" and obviously less joke inducing. The idea behind a tablet is to have it perform all manner of tasks that you would on a tablet - taking notes being one of the main one. Add to that the ability to store and watch media, as well as browse the web, and the iTablet takes on a more professional label.

If I could rename the iPad, I would name it ...

iBook

Yes, the now no longer used names for apple's low end consumer notebook computer.

Think about it, Apple renamed their entire notebook line with the introduction of the Intel chipset, and the iBook name which Apple clearly owns goes unused.

And in the use case of this particular product, i think that iBook is much more suiting then iPad, and it's been long enough that the name wouldn't even be associated with the notebook product line.... The only issue would be googleability and things of that nature.

That, or the "Apple Tablet" ...

I really liked the name Canvas, the short time it circulated around the interwebs. Apple Canvas. Maybe for the 20 inch model ;)

I agree. I'm over the "i" prefix. I like either Canvas or Slate. I imagine Apple keeps the "i" in for branding though.

I would call it the iPilot.

With it you hope that you will be able to fly through anything you wish to do, whether it is with applications, videos, music, or iBooks. Apple reports that you take a network everywhere you go; so why not name it the iPilot, flying high on the World Wide Web, or in your own private world with a pilot in the cockpit and you as the co-pilot you can enjoy the flight, determine the direction you want to take make a left and go through your favorite tunes, maybe you want to take a right and view pictures of friends and family, or keep it a straight smooth course and make it on time to your meetings, appointments and other engagements. Whatever the case may be the iPilot is there to guide you through it all, with allegedly no jet lag, storms or turbulance.

Nerd answer: iHard(ware)
or
Porta-let (portable tablet), not to be confused with Port-o-let public toilets.

Seriously, no answer is going to be perfect. And why are so many people -- women especially -- irritated by iPad? Where was all their derision for all the years of IBM ThinkPads' existence? Or high-jump pits called Jump Pads? A name's a name.
I just think it's cool that they came up with one that's only four letters. Easier to tweet about.

With all the iPad Jokes around, the iPad name seems to be an awkward choice. Also, the name is way too much similar to the iPod and iPod Touch productline, so a different name would be preferable indeed.
I actually liked the iSlate, one of the names that were roaming around on the Internet before its release. I also liked the iTablet name, but maybe Apple is planning to release an even bigger, more notebook-like version, that will use that name.

We don't actually know what restrictions Apple has applied on the naming convention, apart from the obvious, the first letter having to be an 'i'. Maybe a requirement was for the name to consist of four letters, which would seriously limit the possibilities. Another restriction might be one syllable, which would allow the iSlate and iPouch. Even more loose, iTablet may come back into view.

All in all, without knowing the internal restrictions of Apple, I'd vote for the iSlate.

I think iPad and iPod are too similar. I know Apple likes to keep it simple, but I feel like iPad and iPod are too close in name. Older people(no offense to them) are going to get confused about the 2 different products because of the 2 incredibly similar names. Not to mention what every female, and guy who grew up with 3 sisters(me) thinks about when the hear the word Pad. I just feel like Apple dropped the ball on the naming of the iPad a little bit.

If it were up to me I would have kept even more simple.

iTablet
iTab
Even iPod XL would have been better in my opinion.

I really thought the whole "i" thing was over, but boy was I wrong. I hated all the other names, slate, pad etc. The iPad, since the beginning of time, was simply called a "tablet" and I don't see any reason that Apple would differ from such a name. Tablet perfectly describes what it is.

I understand that Apple loves to be unique and doesn't want to remind people of Microsoft's terrible tablets but it's a name that just _works_. They can make it Apple Tablet, just like Apple TV. iPad is a horrible name, but I'm kind of getting used to it. I sometimes call it Tablet and people give me bemused looks...

I don't love the iPad name, but I'm sure Apple put a lot of thought into it. I'm sure they wanted it to sound like "iPod". If that was the case; missions accomplished. I also remember that people made fun of Bing when it first came out, but now everyone is used to it. If I could rename the iPad, I'd probably go with iPage. iTablet would be a good name too, but iPage sounds more like iPod.
