How easy is it for someone to access my personal details on an iPad?

Is there anything I need to now about making my iPad secure, when I buy one? Are they just as open to hackers and viruses as a standard laptop is or are there inbuilt features that make an iPad more secure than a standard windows PC or laptop? I have read somewhere that someone couldn't wait for their iPad because they would receive less hassles in comparison to their current PC.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The security features of the iPad has been designed to encompass the whole aspect of the information that has been saved on the device, whether this information is personal, business or about the client. One of the primary security features of the iPad, is its powerful Encryption security, powered by "256-bit AES encoding hardware-based encryption", which provides the necessary security for all information saved within the device. Furthermore, this feature facilitates encryption in such a way that it will not be overridden by you.

Another interesting security feature of the iPad is the Remote Wipe, wherein if your iPad is amiss or in the hands of a theft, you as a user have the power to order the device to delete the information stored and neutralize your iPad. In this regard, another interesting security feature of the iPad is the Local Wipe, "by default, iPad will automatically wipe the device after 10 failed passcode attempts. As with other passcode policies, the maximum number of failed attempts can be established via a configuration profile or enforced over the air via Exchange ActiveSync policies."

No matter what security that Apple has created in it’s iPad, I still believe in the reasoning that if someone wants in bad enough, they will get in, no matter what you do. However, you can be cautious and observe some guideline to avoid someone access your personal information on the iPad. I will list a few.

1. Make sure you know where your iPad is at all times. The best way to avoid someone getting into your iPad is to keep an eye on it. If you just keep your iPad under your complete control, you will not have to worry about many other security concerns that you would otherwise worry about.

2. If you take your iPad out in public, use a pass code. If you utilize a pass code, it will block users that are not authorized to access your personal applications and apps. However, the pass code protection will only give you limited protection since users that have computer knowledge can, with having the iPad in their hands for awhile, connect to the iPad with a PC and delete the pass code. This will allow them into your device. So again, keep the iPad under your control.

3. Configure your iPad using data erasing. This will erase all the user information after someone has tried ten times to log in with a pass code. If you have used the backup on your iPad on a regular basis, you should be able to put the data back on the iPad.

These should give a few tricks to put up your sleeve to keep your personal information safe on your iPad. Good luck!
