Does iPad have a GPS?

I know some cell phones have GPS programs that look just like you are using a Tom Tom. Some phones are even coming out with GPS dashboard mounts. Does the iPad have anything like this? It is so small yet the screen is so big, it seems like it would be good for maps.
Tip for best answer: M$0.50
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The Wifi-only version of the iPad, which is launched this Saturday, April 3, does not contain GPS. However, they will have some positioning possibilities, using the wifi signal (using WPS, Wifi Positioning System). That type of positioning is not as accurate as GPS, though, relying on WiFi signals, and a location database of WiFi Hotspots.

However, Apple announced the Wifi+3G model, which will be released later this month, will support Assisted GPS, which actually uses both the built-in GPS hardware, and Wifi/cell tower positioning, allowing quicker initial positioning and more accurate location definition.

So, if GPS is a big thing for you, you'd better wait out for the 3G version of the iPad.

It will have GPS, BUT the first release of the iPad will not have GPS chips in them. Later this month a secondary version of the iPad will launch in the US, which will have this functionality, so if you want GPS I would wait a little while.

I have more info in my source about the GPS on the iPad.
