Are there any major competitor products that are coming out that will challenge the iPad?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

This depends on how you would define the term "competitors." Tablet Pcs, netbooks, e-readers can all be classified as competitors to the iPad. As with smartphones, the drivng force for capturing market share will be the availability on applications.

In this regard, the two main competitors to the iPad are the JooJoo which uses a browser based interface, and the WePad, an Android based device. Both of these offer a functionality and appearance similar to the iPad. Of these two, the development of applications would seem to be more forthcoming for the WePad, being that it is Android based.

Even so, factors such as name recognition and media hype tend to favor the initial popularity of the iPad, helping it perhaps to win the race for developers willing to design apps for it over any of its competitors. This is what could ensure supremacy of the iPad in its first generation.

The true number of major competing products is probably arguable. I've included an article below that talks about nine of them, though not all are confirmed as of yet. There are product releases from HP, Dell, Asus and others. I think the companies that already have successful laptop and netbook businesses may have the best shot at success with tablets. I'm typing on an HP right now, so I'm also a little biased. I'd personally also bet on the Asus product doing well since it seems like their netbooks are everywhere.
